The term ‘Great American Novel’ comes from the title of an 1868 essay by American Civil War novelist John William De Forest. In the 19th century, six novels were considered to be a Great American Novel, in which Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and its sequel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn appears.
