In a few English speaking countries, a ‘hand’ is used as a non-SI unit of measurement. It started as a practice to measure the height of the horses and one unit of ‘hand’ corresponds to four inches. This standardisation of four inches was made during the time of King Henry VIII (1541) through a statute.
