On October 1979, the exiled shah of Iran came to the United States for cancer treatment. The U.S President Jimmy Carter’s hospitality towards the exiled Shah enraged a group of radical Iranian students, who stormed the U.S. embassy in Tehran on November 4, 1979, and took 66 Americans hostage. The hostage crisis lasted more than a year and Carter’s inability to secure the release played heavily in his election defeat to Ronald Reagan in the 1980 Presidential election.
