The Greeks called it gastromancy. The name ‘ventriloquism’ comes from the Latin for ‘to speak from the stomach’- venter (belly) and loqui (speak). It was believed that the sounds produced by the stomach were those of the voices of the spirits who lived in the stomach of ventriloquists.
