The Pharos of Alexandria was one of the earliest lighthouses built by the humans. When it was built, it was one of the tallest-man made structures and was part of the Ancient Wonders of the world. The idea was conceived during the reign of Alexander the Great, and the construction was complete during the rule of Ptolemy II (283-246 BCE). The structure was damaged due to earthquakes and the last of its stones was used to build the 15th century fort in Alexandria. Pharos is the origin of the word lighthouse from Greek language.
