On HMS Beagle, a ship commissioned to conduct the second South American survey (1831), Captain Robert Fitzroy was aware that long travels as a lonely captain wasn’t a great idea. His uncle had committed suicide in one such journeys. He seeked a companion and his friend and superior Captain Francis Beaufort arranged Charles Darwin. The journey inspired Darwin’s theory on natural selection.
