The terms ‘glamour’ and ‘science’ go well together in the case of Hedy Lamarr. She is credited with a telecommunication invention known as ‘frequency hopping’. The inspiration came from watching a piano performance where the player piano paper went around with different holes in the paper. It gave her the idea of broadcasting radio on different frequencies. Lamarr presented her idea to the US Intelligence agencies, that led to a radio guiding system for torpedoes. Prior to her life in America, she had to leave her homeland, Austria and her first husband, Fritz Mandl, who had sided with the Nazis.
