Charles Darwin called them as ‘circular groups of coral islets’ in his 1625 work The Structure and Distribution of Coral Reefs. The first recorded use of Atolls is attributed to Darwin’s work. The word originates from the language spoken on the Maldive Islands, Dhivehi (atholhu).
