On August 24, each year, a feast is organised in honour of Bartholomew the Apostle by the Catholics. In 1572, on the St. Bartholomew’s day, a religion war broke out (St. Bartholomew Day Massacre) in France on the eve of the feast, where the French Calvinist Protestants clashed with the Catholics. This violence took place five days after the wedding of Margaret of Valois, daughter of Catherine de’Medici and Henry II of France with Henry Navarre (Henry IV). Most Parisians (were Catholics at the time) had opposed the wedding to the Protestant prince, including the Pope, who refused to accept the wedding.
