FACT FOOD #738

Banoffee is an English pie eaten as a dessert containing bananas, cream and toffee. The name is a portmanteau of the principle ingredients banana and toffee. The owner (Nigel Mackenzie) and the chef (Ian Dowding) of the Hungry Monk Restaurant (Sussex) are credited with the pie’s invention, at least in England. The recipe was first published in 1974 in The Deeper Secrets of the Hungry Monk.
