Sir Mansfield Cumming was the first director of MI6, the secret service bureau of the United Kingdom. He had an unusual way of signing correspondence, with his initial C. This practice prevailed among his successors. Ian Fleming, creator of James Bond was inspired by such practice and placed his character ‘M’ after Colonel Maurice Buckmaster, the director of the Special Ops Executive (SOE) during the WW II.
