The U.S. Coast Guard was formed in 1790 as the Revenue Marine Service (RMS) by Alexander Hamilton, the then secretary of the treasury. In 1915, a merger between the RMS and the U.S. Lifesaving Service came to be known as the Coast Guard. During the WW II, in 1941, the Coast Guard came under the control of the U.S. Navy as a result of American ships becoming casualities of the war. Since 1967, the Coast Guard has remained with the Department of Transportation.
