At the 36th annual Academy Awards (Oscars), Sidney Poitier won the Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Homer Smith in the movie Lilies of the Field. It was a time an African-American actor had won the Best Actor. The Best Supporting Actor award went to Melvyn Douglas for the role of Homer Bannon in Hud.
