After winning the 1999 UEFA Cup with Parma, Gianluigi Buffon became the world’s costliest goalkeeper when he joined the Italian giants Juventus two years later in a £23.3m deal. He has remained with Juventus since 2001 in spite of their relegation in 2006 owing to the team’s match-fixing activities.
