On January 1, 1600, Queen Elizabeth I approved the charter that established British East India Company. This charter was awarded for 15 years to George Clifford and 215 other knights. Five ships and £72,000 pounds was invested by the members of the company to fund the trip to the Indian sub-continent with the intention of breaking the Indonesian spice monopoly held by the Dutch at that time.
