For 11 years, from 1793 till 1804, there was a slave rebellion in Haiti against France, that resulted in their independence. Haiti was the first Latin-American country to break shackles from its colonial masters. Before adopting the local name (Taino) Haiti, it was known as Hispaniola when Columbus first took possession of this place.
