Popish Plot was a fabrication (1678-1681) propagated by an English Anglican priest Titus Oates. Popish plot involved anti-Catholic feelings and a conspiracy to assassinate the English monarch at the time, Charles II. This unfortunate rumour resulted in the death of more than 20 people and Titus was eventually convicted for perjury.
