Vasco Núñez de Balboa, a legandary Spanish explorer is credited to being the first European to have crossed the Isthmus of Panama and thereby reaching the Pacific Ocean from the Newly discovered territories of America. A currency of Panama, the Panamanian Balboa (the other is USD) is named in his honour since 1904, when Panama seceded from Colombia with the backing of United States in 1903.
