The word ‘robot’ came into English lexicon from the English translation of the 1920 play “R.U.R” (Rossum’s Universal Robots) written by Karel Capek. The word is of Czech origin, robotnik, meaning forced worker from robata ‘forced labour’. Although, Karel Capek popularised the term with his play, it was initially used by his brother Josef Capek in a short story.
