The invention of the parking meter was the result of a competition assigned to students at the University of Oklahoma. It was a result in finding a solution for the increased car traffic that plagued the major American cities. Carl Magee, an American journalist installed the first parking meter on 16 July, 1935 in Oklahoma City.
