The word parliament comes from the Old French word ‘parlement’ meaning a formal conference or assembly. Parlement comes from the verb ‘parler’ which means ‘to speak’. Of course, there is a Latin connection here as the term for a official gathering of aristocrats summoned by a monarch is ‘parliamentum’.
