While serving in the military, William Munro also spent time researching on tropical grasses in India (1834-1838), Kashmir (1847) and Barbados (1870-1875) with which he published a detailed written study, especially on the bamboo species. For these contributions, the grass species Munroa, Munronia and Munrochla are named in his honour.
