In ancient Rome, the unit amphora was used to measure heavy goods and liquids. Amphora is equal to one cubic foot, which measures between 19 lites and 36 litres. The word comes from Latin amphora and from Greek amphoreus meaning jar, urn, contraction of amphiphoreus, literally “two-handled,” from amphi- “on both sides”.
