Navanethem Pillay, South Africa’s first non-white woman judge of the High Court of South Africa was recently honoured with the highest French civilian award, the Legion of Honour. Navi Pillay is of Indian origin and served as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014. She has the distinction of being the first South African awarded with a doctorate in law from the prestigious Harvard Law School.
