Kosovo is landlocked and is surrounded by Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro and Serbia. The name Kosovo is derived from the Serbian word which means ‘blackbirds’ – from the Kosovo Polje, the battle site of the 1389 Battle of Kosovo Field. Kosovo sought its independence from Serbia in 2008 and the now-used national flag was designed by Muhamer Ibrahimi, and the six stars symbolises the six major ethnic groups of Kosovo.
