Uruguay won the inaugural football World Cup in 1930 at home. Several of the European teams (owing to logistics issues) had boycotted the 1930 event. When the 1934 World Cup was held in Italy, Uruguay boycotted the event in protest of the European boycott in 1930. Thereby, Uruguay is so far the only country not to play as defending champions in the football World Cup.
