The Operation Oak or the German name Unternehmen Eiche was carried out by Otto Skorzney who was personally handpicked by Adolf Hitler to rescue Benito Mussolini. On Sept 8,1943 Skorzney carried out a glider mission to rescue Mussolini from captivity at Campo Imperatore Hotel, a ski lodge in Gran Sasso. The person was later flown to Vienna where he was given a hero’s welcome. This operation is also referred to as Gran Sasso Raid.
