India’s internal intelligence agency, the Intelligence Bureau (IB) was formed in 1887 in order to monitor the Russian movements in Afghanistan fearing a Russian invasion of the then British India. Thus IB was one of the world’s oldest intelligence agency. After India’s independence in 1947, the agency was renamed Central Intelligence Bureau and came under the department of Home Affairs ministry. Later, the named was changed to Intelligence Bureau and has remained an vital arm of national intelligence and security.
