The Indian Motorcycle Co. started off as Hendee Manufacturing Company by George M. Hendee in 1897. The company started manufacturing bicycles under the brand names Silver King, Silver Queen and American Indian, which was shortened to “Indian” and it became the primary brand name moving forward. The first motorised bike came in 1901 which paved the way for company’s first American motorcycle factory in Springfield, Massachusetts.
