Warren Avis, an American entrepreneur served in the United States Army Air Forces at the time of WW II. As a pilot, he always found difficulty in finding ground transports at airports which prompted him to take up a stake in a Ford dealership and use the cars at airports for rentals. This business came to be known as Avis Rent A Car in 1946. After eight years, he sold his business for $8 million and moved on to steer Avis Enterprises focusing on high tech electronic companies. The name ‘Avis’ is related to House of Aviz, a royal Portuguese dynasty who ruled Portugal in the 14th century.
