FACT FOOD #408

Captain Nemo, a fictional literary character created by Jules Verne appeared first in the novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Nemo’s real name is Prince Dakkar and was born to Indian royal family. Nemo in Latin means ‘No Man’ and Point Nemo, the most remote ocean point on Earth (South Pacific Ocean) is named after Captain Nemo. It was located by a Croatian-Canadian survey engineer Hrvoje Lukatela using a geospatial computer programme in 1992. His reasoning was “Since Earth is 3-dimensional, its most remote ocean point must sit the same distance away from three nearest coastlines.”
