In Middle Eastern mythology (Persian), Roc (also Rokh, Rukh) is a mythical bird of enormous size. In the One Thousand and One Nights stories, Rukh is the bird which helps Sindbad from a dangerous island. The Rukh bird is also mentioned in the Ethiopian holy book Kebra Negast. The word Shah Rukh in Persian literally means King of the Rukh.
