The character Atticus Finch from the novel ‘To Kill a Mocking Bird’ was inspired by author Harper Lee’s father Amasa Coleman Lee, who was a newspaper editor and attorney. Coleman Lee defended two black men who had been charged with murder unsuccessfully. After the conviction, Coleman Lee decided to give up criminal law altogether. Gregory Peck played the Oscar winning role of Atticus Finch in the 1962 movie version.
