Hyderabad, the captial city of the Southern state of Telangana and de jure capital of Andhra Pradesh was established in the year 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah. There are several theories that points to the name of this city. One theory points that, the city was known as Baghnagar (city of gardens); the other theory points to the fact that it was named Bhaganagar after Bhagmati, a local dancing girl with whom Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah had fallen in love. Another theory points to the name “Haydar’s city” or “lion city” and lastly, the city was named after Haidar, the son of Quli Qutb Shah. The records suggest, the name Hyderabad was in use from the early 1600’s.
