Uganda known in Swahili as “Buganda” was a British protectorate since 1894. Buganda was the kingdom of the 52 clans of the Baganda. Baganda (“Brothers and Sisters” or “Bundle People”) is itself short for Baganda Ba Katonda (“Brothers and Sisters of God”), a reference to an indigenous creation story. Since it is independence in 1962, there have been many conflicts and a lengthy civil war. The flag of Uganda consists of six equal horizontal bands of black, yellow, red, black, yellow and red. It consists of a grey crowned/crested crane (national symbol and military badge of Ugandan soldiers under the UK) superimposed at the centre. Uganda also happens to be the second most populous land-locked country after Ethiopia.
