In the Northeast of India, the seven states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Tripura form the seven sister states of India. Collectively, they have a population of 3.7% of India’s total and covers seven percent of India’s total area. The sobriquet of “The Land of Seven Sisters” was originally coined in 1972 by Jyothi Prasad Saikia, a journalist from Tripura during a radio talk show. He later wrote a book on the these states which he titled ‘the Land of Seven Sisters’ and since its publication, the name has caught on.
