FACT FOOD #369

The Windward Islands are the group of islands that lie south of the Leeward Islands and as a cluster they start from Dominica up until the North of Trinidad and Tobago. Dominica, Martinique, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent & the Grenadines and Grenada are part of Windward Islands. They are called so because they were more windward (direction upwind from the point of reference) to sailing ships arriving in the New World than the Leeward Islands (direction downward from the point of reference) noting the fact that the prevailing winds in the West Indies blow east to west.
