Clotel; or, The President’s Daughter, a novel written by the American playwright William Wells Brown in 1853 is considered by many to be the first novel published by an African American. The novel talks about the story of Clotel and her sister, both creation of fiction and slave daughters of the US President Thomas Jefferson. The author published this novel at the age of 20 in London after escaping slavery.
