In American and Canadian football, Blitz is a tactic of using more defense players in order to disrupt the opposite team’s pass attempts. The name ‘blitz’ is inspired by the German word ‘blitzkrieg’ (lightning war) which was employed during World War II. The similarity in both terms is the use of speed and surprise element to disrupt the opponent’s progress.
