Charles Rolland Douglass invented the ‘Laugh Track’ in 1950 for the “Howard McCune Show”, using samples from the recordings of Red Skelton’s pantomime shows or Marcel Marceau’s performances. Eventually forming his own company called Northridge Electronics, his company held a monopoly in this field for 20 years. The 28-inch-high apparatus resembles an organ, having ten horizontal and four vertical keys and a foot pedal, to set the various parameters.
Laugh Track is a separate soundtrack with the artificial sound of audience laughter, made to be inserted into television programming of comedy shows.
