Junta is a term formed in Spain during the era of the Peninsular War in the times of Napolean. This group of people (prominent members of the society) formed councils across Spain to resist Napolean. The term gets its origins from the 1620’s Spanish and Portuguese term ‘junta’ for ‘council/meeting/convention’ which in turn comes from the Latin ‘iuncta’ meaning ‘to joint’ from the verb iungere ‘to join’. The word got its present meaning in 1808 popularised by the Peninsular War.
