Emma Mills Nutt is recorded as being the world’s first female telephone operator in America after she was hired by Edwin Holme’s Telephone Despatch Co. Exchange in Boston, Massachusetts. This happened in 1878 on 1st of September. Her sister Stella Nut too joined her and became the second female telephone operator. September 1 is celebrated as Emma M. Nutt Day and a synthesised speech attendant system created by ‘Preffered Voice Inc’ and ‘Philips Electronics NV’ named ‘EMMA’ is named after her.
