Blu-ray discs – the name was derived from the fact that it uses shorter wavelength Blue-violet lasers (405nm) to read and write on the chalcogenide disc. This technique enables more information to be stored digitally in the same amount of space. Sony unveiled the first prototype of this generation discs in October 2000, the trademark logo came in 2001 and the name of this project was officially termed as ‘Blu-ray discs’.
