Palms, the original purpose of the inventors Jeff Hawkins, Donna Dubinsky and Ed Colligan was to create a handwriting recognition software named Graffiti but their research convinced them they could create better hardware. Before the development in 1996, Hawkins actually carried a block of wood, the size of the product, for a week in his pocket. The product ‘Pilot’ was launched in 1997 and the name of their product was renamed in 1998 to ‘Palms’ due to a trademark infringement lawsuit brought on by a popular pen manufacturing company, Pilot Pen Corporation.
