Udant Martand (The Rising Sun) happens to be the first all-Hindi weekly newspaper published in India. This goes back to May 30 1826, when a Kanpur lawyer Pandit Jugal Kishore Shukla followed the trend after Bengali and Urdu newspapers were already in existence. The first issue had 500 copies and the main office of Udant Martand was in Kolkata. Each year on May 30, Hindi Journalism day is observed as this newspaper paved the way for Hindi journalism.
