August, one of the seven months that has 31 days was originally called Sextilis (sixth month with March being first) in Latin in the original ten-month Roman calendar. When January and February was added by King Numa Pompilius, it became the eighth month with 29 days. Julius Caesar added two days to August giving it the modern length of 31 days. In 8 BC, the month was named in the honour of Augustus (the first emperor of Roman empire).
