Bombay (now Mumbai) was part of the seven islands which were captured by Portuguese in 1534 and were handed over to England as dowry by Portuguese when Catherine of Braganza married Charles II in 1661. This was then rented to East India Company by Charles II and by mid 19th century, these islands has been merged courtesy of reclamation projects. The original seven islands were – Isle of Bombay, Colaba, Old Woman’s Island (Little Colaba), Mahim, Mazagaon, Parel and Worli.
