The earliest printed usage of the word ‘Cocktail’ is said to be in “The Farmer’s Cabinet”, April 28, 1803.  The second (and the officially recognized) usage is in the May 13, 1806 edition of the Balance and Columbian Repository that is printed from New York. This became really popular during the Prohibition period in the United States primarily to mask the taste of bootlegged alcohol.
