FACT FOOD #236

In 16th century, liquor distillers ‘burned’ their names into barrels in order to differentiate their products from others and mostly from the cheaper substitutes. This act derives its name from the Old Norse term ‘brandr’ meaning to burn – which gave raise to the word ‘brand’ as the modern definition of the word closely relates to the practice of producers burning their mark onto their products.
