The 1928 collection of loosely linked stories titled Ashenden:Or the British Agent was based on Somerset Maugham’s personal experience as a member of British Intelligence in Europe during WWI. It contains sixteen chapters and most of the characters that appear in the book are based on many real life characters who participated in the war.
